ABOUT BIG BEAR RETREAT CENTER

R+R is hosted at the Big Bear Retreat Center (BBRC), a restorative retreat from city life at a 7,000-foot elevation across 93 acres on Yuhaaviat land (also known as Big Bear, CA).

The BBRC is located at 1000 Sugarpine Road, Big Bear City, CA 92314. The facilities consist of 11 cabins, a dining hall, a meditation hall, and numerous hiking trails.  Each building has a sizable outdoor deck suited for safe and socially distanced outdoor activity.

Given the size and plethora of outdoor activity spaces, BBRC is set up to minimize the risk of COVID-19 by maximizing social distancing. Additional Health & Wellness protections are included below.

ARRIVAL

We would like to request that all guests arrive between 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2022. If this will be difficult for you, please let us know as soon as possible.

There are three ways to get to Big Bear, and you can use the guide below to access directions, weather updates, and road conditions to help you plan your trip. Please do check the conditions before you leave, as at least one route has experienced closures this year. Travel from Los Angeles usually takes 2 - 2.5 hours, from the Inland Empire about 1.5 hours, and from San Diego about 3 - 3.5 hours.

If you have indicated your interest in carpooling, we will follow up with you at least a week in advance.

WHAT TO BRING

We want you to be as comfortable as possible during your stay. Below you'll find a list of necessary and recommended things to pack.

The most important thing to remember is that Big Bear is hot and dry during the day and cold and dry at night. Please pack accordingly.

We'll also be creating a community altar. There are suggested items to bring on the Packing List, should you want to contribute.

HEALTH & WELLNESS PROTOCOLS

R+R was created in 2020 in response to multiple crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. We created robust protocols then and have continued to update them to meet the challenges facing Black folx today (which now includes hMPX). Being in community means prioritizing the health and wellness of all participants.

When reading the Public Health Protocols, pay particular attention to the requirement to get a PCR test in advance of the retreat.
